GLOW WORMS @ QUEEN CAMEL
ALL IMAGES OF GLOW WORMS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AS THEY WERE IN BREACH OF COPYRIGHT.
Apologies for all upsets and thank you for putting us right.
If anyone has a photo of a glow worm we would be very grateful if you could allow us a copy for this website.
Welcome to our group.
We are here to survey, monitor, discuss and enjoy this amazing little beetle.

Glow Worms 2016
Dear Friends
13 of us met on Monday 26th January 2015 around the fire at the Mildmay Arms. 3 had to peel off to attend a meeting in the Memorial Hall, but we got some good ideas from them first.
I hope the following nuggets represent what we decided (but feel free to amend or correct):

I hope the following nuggets represent what we decided (but feel free to amend or correct):
- we shall continue to monitor the glow-worm habitat and population with a walk one night a week over 6 weeks in the summer. End of June to the beginning of August. Probably the same groups and routes as last year - but can be flexible here.
- Douglas to take us on a guided walk of Sparkford (and other?) copses to see what we have living very near to us - the variety of trees especially. May. A majority interest in this.
- Watch the Griffins' honey bees in the QC allotments. Protective clothing is essential - we hope John Carnegie can help with this activity and with the kit. Paul and Jill are happy to run this over several weeks with small groups in the summer. 6 present were interested.
- A hedge walk - when Douglas has found some decent hedgerows in the area. Any suggestions for the most interesting hedges in terms of flora and fauna?
- Edward to investigate the possibility of an owl watch in June at a site near Ansford.
- Wild flower meadows - there are a number in the area. Some of us went to look at the fine array orchids in the fields at Walk Farm near Redlynch last year - and we could arrange another visit this year.
- Consider an outing to the RSPB area near Fifehead, especially to hear the nightingales.
- Join up with the activities organised by the Weston Bampfylde bird group - need to find out more.
- A fungi walk with an enthusiastic guide on the Blackdown Hills in October - Douglas to liaise. Majority interest. Any suggestions for good fungi sites nearer to Queen Camel?
- An otter walk near the Cam, led by Jo - seriously early morning start in late Spring / Summer.
Get Together / Meeting - in the pub - Wednesday 20th August 2024
Twelve of us met in the Mildmay Arms last Wednesday and had a really enjoyable evening. It was not planned as a meeting, more as a friendly get-together, but, whilst being friendly, we were also surprisingly productive of ideas and plans.
What we decided:
- to set up communications links: facebook was discussed, but a web page or email group was favoured.
- group to commit to a full-on survey in 2015, with weekly checks on g-w's over 6 weeks and possibly also an intensive one week of checks.
- Jane to ask Peter Bright for recommendations / advice on this.
- other wild life explorations were discussed with a firm proposal to have: an evening visit to the Somerset Levels for the starlings this Autumn (Jo P-C to coordinate?) Otter Watch early one morning in Spring 2015.
- Criteria for participation in activities: commitment; living locally.
Our focus has broadened, but monitoring glow-worm trends remains the priority.
The outcome so far is:
this email group - please let Jane know if you don't want to be included
and Jo, with Sharon's help, is setting up a dedicated area on the website - here it is!
www.queen-camel.co.uk for photos, chat, ideas and all things creative. The digitised map, which Ben produced, showing the sites of the 36 g-w's you spotted is already on the website.
Report on the Glow Worm Hunt

Jennie and Jane presented the idea of a Glow Worm hunt within the boundary of Queen Camel to be carried out by anyone who might be interested as part of a national survey. http://www.glowworms.org.uk/
